All you need to know about Mount Everest.
Mount Everest is the above sea level highest mountain in the world.
We have all heard about the highest mountain in the world which I'm sure we all were taught at schools at a very young age. Mount Everest, the highest above sea level mountain is situated between Nepal and Tibet. It is known by the Nepalese as Sagarmatha (meaning forehead of the sky) and by the Tibetans as Chomolungma (meaning mother of the world). It is at the crest of the Himalayan mountain chain. The mountain is 8848 meters in height. It is estimated that the mount is 60 million years old. It was discovered in the 18th century by George Everest.
So how was this mountain made? The movement of the Indian tectonic plate against the Asian plate created Everest. This force is still active today which has resulted in the growth of the mountain quarter of an inch higher every year. The mountain top is always covered in ice and the temperature can be as low as -80oF. The main problem in surviving at the summit of Mt. Everest is that only 1/3 of air pressure exist in comparison with the sea level. The oxygen intake is reduced as climbers reach higher and higher. To battle this problem climbers carry oxygen tanks. But the problem with that is that they are heavy to carry and used up cylinders are thrown away all over the place.
There are 17 roads that lead to the summit of Everest. But the most common roads are from Nepal which is the Southeast Ridge and from Tibet the North Ridge. The first people to climb Mount Everest were Sir Edmund Hillary and Tenzin Norgay. But in 1924 George Mallory and Andrew Irvine had made an attempt to climb Mt. Everest. But the issue here is that they had disappeared on their way back. It is unknown whether they reached the summit before their ascent.
